Question 1

What is one truth about your adoptee experience that you wish non-adoptees would hear without becoming defensive, correcting you, comparing your story, or demanding that you prove it?

The reflections below were shared by members of our community in response to this question. Each response represents one person's lived experience and should not be interpreted as speaking for everyone who shares that experience.

Responses are shared anonymously unless the contributor requested otherwise. Some may have been lightly edited for spelling, punctuation, grammar, or length without changing the meaning of the contributor's words.

I can love my adoptive family while also grieving the family, identity, and connections I lost. Both truths can exist at the same time.

I do not need someone else to agree with my experience for it to be real. I need people to listen without trying to explain it away.

Adoption did not begin with gaining a family. It began with losing one.
